Never underestimate the power of local connection

Rain or shine, the City of Rockingham did an incredible job hosting the first Act Belong Commit Partner Expo. The initiative brought together a diverse range of Partner organisations offering ways for people to get involved, learn something new, and connect with others – all great ways to stay mentally healthy.
From creative workshops and theatre productions to senior tech classes, food pantries, and even some friendly reptiles, the day was vibrant, inclusive and engaging.
City of Rockingham’s Community Development Officer (Health and Wellbeing), Charise, said hosting the initiative for the first time was a rewarding experience.
“It was wonderful to bring all the local community Partners together in person.”
We asked Charise if she had any tips for others thinking of creating a similar event, and here’s what she shared:
Tips for other Partners
- Choosing a date: Involving as many organisations as possible means thinking about availability. For example, community sports groups may not be free on weekends, and many support services don’t operate outside weekday hours.
- Think about timing: Weekday mornings can mean lower attendance, as many people are at work. Choosing the right time of day can make a big difference.
- Give plenty of notice: The more time organisations have to plan, the more likely they are to get involved.
- Getting the word out: Sharing the event through Partner networks and newsletters is a great way to build interest.
Positive feedback
Conversations on the day were overwhelmingly positive! A small snapshot from the event survey showed stallholders reported plenty of interest, with people asking questions, picking up flyers and wanting to know more. Everyone who responded said they left with a better understanding of the Act Belong Commit message and discovered new community groups they plan to follow up with.
Congratulations to the City of Rockingham on the success of your event! It was heartening to see the Partner network in action and supporting thriving communities.
