Become a ‘Youth Connector’

Posted 2 May 2019

Are you or do you know someone aged between 16-25 years and passionate about mental health and wellbeing?

The Act-Belong-Commit Youth Connectors Program engages young people (‘Connectors’) in the Act-Belong-Commit principles for good mental health, upskilling them to be able to assist and encourage peers to engage in mentally healthy activities.

Young people interested in becoming a Youth Connector are invited to attend a fun, interactive two-hour workshop at the Muswellbrook PCYC, where they meet likeminded individuals and participate in educational and interactive activities.

Date: Monday 6th May 2019

Time: 3:30-5:30pm

Venue: Muswellbrook PCYC, Corner Carl and Market Street

RSVP: By Thursday 2nd May to carly.hughes@newcastle.edu.au or 0438 264 610

The workshop aims to increase their knowledge on how to keep mentally healthy, as well as boost their confidence in how to encourage and support their friends and community.

As well as benefiting their own mental health, ‘Connectors’ become a local source of information on community activities and encourage others to engage in activities that build resilience and nurture their mental health.

Darci Miller Youth Connectors Coordinator said “We know that young people are most likely to turn to their friends for support when things aren’t going so well, which is why it’s so important that we upskill young people to support each other and encourage each other to do things to be mentally healthy. This is why I am very excited to be running our first interstate Youth Connectors workshop in Muswellbrook and know these skills will be very beneficial to the community especially when facing testing times like drought”.

Since launching the program in 2017, Darci has trained over 637 passionate young people to be ‘Connectors’ across Western Australia. A recent evaluation of the Youth Connectors Program shows it is making an impact in changing the way young people think – and talk – about mental health

Carly Hughes Muswellbrook Healthy & Well Local Coordinator said “We are very excited to be bringing Youth Connectors to the Muswellbrook LGA as part of the Act-Belong-Commit campaign and hope young people will jump on this great opportunity to get involved in their community”.
