Theatre Kimberley is delighted to present The Shorebird Quest, celebrating the migratory shorebirds of Roebuck Bay. Be amazed as the shores of Roebuck Bay light up with giant illuminated puppets, storytelling, dance, and original music performed by local musicians and school choirs.

Bring friends and family, a picnic, something to sit on and enjoy the natural amphitheater and beauty of Town Beach at night.

One of Theatre Kimberley’s largest collaborative works in over twenty years, The Shorebird Quest is a co-­creation between Theatre Kimberley, Broome Bird Observatory, Parks and Wildlife Services’ Yawuru Rangers, Nyamba Buru Yawuru Country Managers, five Broome schools and the local community.

The Shorebird Quest follows Curtis the Curlew on his migration journey from Siberia to Broome through a fusion of Yawuru Country knowledge, musical theatre and puppetry.

“It’s an extraordinary synthesis of art, science and community and just like the migratory birds that travel across the globe to visit Roebuck Bay, it forges new connections between people and places,” said writer and puppeteer Bernadette Trench-­-Thiedeman.

The Shorebird Quest features original music written by musical director Jaime Jackett of the Austral-­-Canadian band Belle Miners and former warden of the Broome Bird Observatory. The music will be performed live by choir students from Broome Primary, Cable Beach Primary, and St Mary’s Primary, as well as the Broometime Singers, alongside local musicians.

“It has been a joy to fuse together my love for composing and shorebirds. I’ve been co-­-writing with the magnificent Hayden Khutze and I’m really proud of what we’ve put together – catchy songs with oodles of soul and a sneaky dash of education,” said Musical Director, Jaime Jackett.

The story has been researched and co-­-written with Parks and Wildlife Services Yawuru Rangers and Yawuru Country Managers.

“The Yawuru Country Managers have never been a part of a production like this before. The story of Curtis the Curlew captures why the far eastern curlews are endangered. We see this show as a fun and entertaining way to teach people about why keeping Roebuck Bay healthy is so important and why we have to be considerate to migratory shorebirds like Curtis,” said Yawuru Country Manager, Johani Mamid.

This project is made possible with support from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund; the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program, supported by Royalties for Regions; Healthway, promoting the Act-Belong-­Commit message, and the Broome Community.
