School belonging contributes to positive relationships between staff, students and the wider community and helps creates a positive school culture. It’s important for schools to focus on whole-school belonging strategies, to ensure the school community feels connected in the classroom, at school events and activities and comfortable approaching the school.
Creating Belonging Factsheet
Evidence on the importance of creating school belonging is available to schools through this factsheet. It provides practical strategies for schools to implement to create a sense of belonging for students and staff.
Staff Belonging PowerPoint
A PowerPoint has been developed for easy use in staff or wellbeing planning meetings to promote the importance of creating school belonging and the many strategies available for schools to use.
Belonging Posters
A3 posters with the message “We All Belong at…” are available to download and edit to include your classroom or school name. The posters have been created as PowerPoint files to allow for simple editing. Add text in the space provided and save as a PDF!
Creating staff belonging
It’s important to build a positive culture in your school. The first step is to ensure staff feel a strong sense of belonging and connectedness with each other and the school. Spreading kindness can improve feelings of connection, belonging and lead to an increase in positive school culture and morale.

Staff Thank You Notes
Encourage staff to use Thank You Notes to thank colleagues for their support or hard work at the school.
Staff Shout Outs
Ensure staff are acknowledged for their positive contributions to the school by encouraging staff to complete a Staff Shout Out slip and read completed Staff Shout Outs in regular meetings.
Random Act of Kindness: Fill Someone’s Cup!
Use this resource to encourage staff to spread kindness by making other staff a hot drink when they might need their cup filled up!
